New Knees Relieve Old Pain Nov 5, 2012
Patient Name: Kate S., Athens
Care Provided: Orthopaedics
Kate S., of Athens, had her first total knee-replacement surgery in October 2010. The pain had just become too great to deal with any longer.
“It got to the point that I didn’t want to go anywhere or do anything,” she says. “My knees hurt nearly all of the time. It was bad.”
It had even become hard for Kate to work at her job as a cook in Memorial Health Center’s Nutrition Services.
“It became really clear that I needed to do something,” she says. “The pain was just getting in the way too much of the time.”
Kate decided to have a pair of knee replacements done at Memorial Health Center (Medford) by Daniel D. Priebe, DO, a surgeon at Bone & Joint Center.
“The first surgery went terrific and left me feeling so much better,” Kate says. “I had the surgery to get rid of the pain, and it did just that.”
In May 2011, Kate had her other knee replaced. This time, however, relieving pain was just pne reason to have it done.
“My daughter said I had to have my other knee done before her wedding in August,” she says. “So I did.”
After both surgeries, Kate stayed a few nights at Memorial Health Center. She received around-the-clock care and attention, and began rehab to get her knees in better shape than they'd been before she started having trouble.
“Both of my surgery experiences were wonderful,” Kate says. “From the time I walked in the door to the time I left, I received excellent care. Everyone kept me filled in, so I always knew what to expect. My safety and comfort were always a top concern. ”
After each surgery, she also did roughly five weeks of outpatient physical therapy with Rick Schneveis, a physical therapist with Medford Therapy & Fitness.
“The rehab was tough, but it helped me very much,” Kate says. “The staff at Medford Therapy & Fitness are very good at what they do and are wonderful people.”
Months after her second surgery, Kate says she couldn’t be more satisfied with the results.
“There’s no pain in my knees anymore, and life is so much better,” she says. “We have a really wonderful facility here in Medford, with fantastic local doctors and specialists coming from Wausau. I really owe a lot to Memorial Health Center and everyone who cared for me. It’s so wonderful enjoying life pain-free.”
