Taylor County’s population was 19,872 in 2004; growth is a modest 1%. The largest employers of the county include Weather Shield Manufacturing, Kraft Pizza Company, Marathon Cheese Corporation, Memorial Health Center, Hurd Windows & Doors, and the Medford Public School District.
The Medford Area Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Foundation ensures continued progressive growth.
The local newspaper, The Star News, and the local radio station, WKEB / K99, keep our communities well informed.
Academically Proud
With three public school districts and two private institutions serving the needs of Taylor County, your children’s education is secured. Our ACT scores are consistently above the state average. Advanced placement classes, choir, band, theatre, and academic trips abroad through the French, Spanish, and History departments are readily available. The business, marketing, journalism, and forensic programs are also exceptionally strong. School sports programs are healthy and growing.
Higher education, career development, and lifelong learning are readily available in Medford. Northcentral Technical College, has its West Campus located in Medford. It offers credit classes in several associate degree programs through self-paced ‘flex-labs,’ interactive television, and a conventional classroom setting.

Taylor County offers outstanding diversity in outdoor recreation opportunities. With four major rivers; 94 lakes; and 123,910 acres of federal; 7,000 acres of state; and 17,400 acres of county forests, Taylor County boasts the finest in year-round outdoor recreation. Enjoy:
- Ideal hiking, biking, and horseback riding experiences. Located within the county is the longest unbroken stretch of the National Scenic Ice Age Trail (60 miles), which combines with the Pine Line Rail/Trail (26 miles).
- Relaxing rounds of golf at Tee-Hi Golf Course or Black River Golf Club.
- Thirty-six (36) scenic miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and 350 miles of groomed snowmobile and ATV trails.
- Invigorating downhill skiing within 60 miles.
- Excellent small game, deer, bear, and bird hunting.

Taylor County offers many activities at the Simek Recreation Center (an indoor ice facility), a local Historic Museum, numerous municipal festivals, and an ever-growing farmers’ market. A variety of active sports leagues for kids and/or adults include hockey, softball, soccer, archery, golf, and others. Taylor County is also home to the North Central Rodeo competition, and the origin of the Pine Line Marathon.
A multitude of social and civic organizations are active and thriving – the Master Gardeners, Kiwanis Club, Lions, Rotary Club, the Taylor County Sportsman’s Club, a curling club, the Chequamegon Bird Club, the Medford Association of Rocket Science Club, among others.
